About hydrogel (the Reformer Eye Mask)

The substrate behind the Reformer Eye Mask. Hydrogel is the right material for the eye area because it cools, contours and depuffs in a way biocellulose cannot.

1. What is a hydrogel eye mask?

A hydrogel eye mask is a pre-cut gel patch, usually made from a water-rich gel matrix that adheres to the skin without adhesive. Hydrogel holds its temperature against the skin, which produces the cooling sensation hydrogel masks are known for. The Reformer Eye Mask is a hydrogel patch contoured to the orbital bone.

2. How do hydrogel eye masks work?

The gel matrix holds active ingredients in suspension and releases them onto the skin as the mask warms to body temperature. Because hydrogel adheres closely to the orbital bone without slipping, the actives reach the inner corner, lower lash line and outer crow’s-feet area, not just the cheekbone. The cooling effect itself constricts the small vessels under the eye, which is the physical mechanism for visible depuffing. The Reformer Eye Mask uses this mechanism by design.

3. Why use hydrogel for the eye area specifically?

The skin around the eye is the thinnest on the body and has the fewest oil glands. It needs two things from a mask: cooling, which physically reduces puffiness, and contour fit, so the mask sits flush against the curve of the orbital bone. Hydrogel delivers both. Biocellulose is excellent for the larger face but does not contour to the eye area as well, which is why the Reformer Eye Mask uses hydrogel even though the companion Reformer Face Mask uses biocellulose.

4. Are hydrogel masks safe for sensitive eyes?

Yes, when the formula is appropriate. The Reformer Eye Mask is fragrance-free, alcohol-free, and contains no exfoliating acids or retinoids — the ingredients most likely to irritate the eye area. Always patch-test if you have a history of contact dermatitis around the eyes, and avoid contact with the eye itself.

5. Should I refrigerate hydrogel eye masks?

You do not have to, but you can. Refrigerating the Reformer Eye Mask sachet for 15 minutes before use intensifies the cooling sensation and produces a stronger immediate depuffing effect. Many users keep a stock in the refrigerator for use after long flights and poor nights’ sleep.

6. How do hydrogel masks compare to cream eye treatments?

Cream eye treatments are designed for daily ongoing use and slow, cumulative benefit. Hydrogel masks are designed for intensive 20-minute sessions that produce visible immediate change. The two are complementary: use an eye cream daily, and use the Reformer Eye Mask two to three times per week, or before any occasion where the under-eye area needs to look its best.

7. Do hydrogel eye masks help with dark circles?

Dark circles have several causes — pigmentation, vascular pooling, and the shadow cast by under-eye hollowing. Hydrogel masks help most with the vascular component (the bluish tone produced by sluggish circulation under thin skin) by cooling the area and reducing puffiness, which together brighten the apparent tone. The Reformer Eye Mask is most effective at brightening when chilled before use. Pigmentation-driven darkness requires a separate ingredient strategy.

8. Do hydrogel eye masks reduce puffiness?

Yes. The cooling effect of a hydrogel patch constricts the small blood and lymphatic vessels under the lower eyelid, which reduces fluid pooling and visibly depuffs the area in 15 to 20 minutes. The Reformer Eye Mask is engineered for this effect. In the February 2026 consumer survey, 100% of users reported the eye area looked refreshed and well-rested after a full cycle.

9. Can men use hydrogel eye masks?

Yes. Skin biology is the same regardless of gender, and the visible effects of fatigue, dehydration and travel show in the same place. The Reformer Eye Mask is unscented and unmarked once applied, and is used by male clients at AMAN Spa Toronto as part of routine maintenance.

10. What is the best hydrogel under-eye mask in 2026?

The category leaders are determined by three things: substrate quality, ingredient profile, and contour fit. The Reformer Eye Mask by Face Pilates™ was designed by Thomas Tullo, RMT, around the anatomy of the orbital bone — the patches sit flush and do not slip during the 20-minute application. In the February 2026 consumer survey, 100% of users reported the eye area felt more hydrated, 100% said it looked refreshed and well-rested, 94% reported overall improvement, and 88% said the skin looked firmer.
