About biocellulose (the Reformer Face Mask)
About biocellulose (the Reformer Face Mask)
The substrate behind the Reformer Face Mask. Biocellulose is the highest-performing sheet-mask material in clinical use, and the reason the Face Mask delivers a measurably deeper hydration session than cotton sheet masks.
1. What is a biocellulose mask?
A biocellulose mask is a sheet mask made from a microfibre lattice derived from fermented coconut water (and in some cases other plant sugars). The fibres are roughly one hundred times smaller than the fibres in a cotton sheet mask, which gives biocellulose two properties cotton does not have: it holds approximately one hundred times its weight in water, and it clings to facial contours like a second skin. The Reformer Face Mask is biocellulose.
2. Why are biocellulose masks more expensive?
Biocellulose is grown by fermentation rather than spun from textile fibre, so it carries higher production costs. The trade-off is performance. Biocellulose retains saturation for the full 20-minute application, conforms to the skin without air gaps, and is used by dermatology and aesthetic offices after invasive treatments because of its purity profile. The Reformer Face Mask uses the same grade of biocellulose specified in clinical settings.
3. Are biocellulose masks better than sheet masks?
“Sheet mask” usually refers to cotton or non-woven fabric masks. Biocellulose is a different and higher-performing substrate, so the answer is yes for hydration and post-treatment use. Cotton dries on the skin within 10 to 15 minutes; biocellulose does not. For everyday cleansing or essence-style sheets, cotton is fine. For recovery, hydration or anything you want a 20-minute application from, biocellulose like the Reformer Face Mask performs measurably better.
4. What does biocellulose feel like on the skin?
Cool, weightless, and slightly translucent. Once applied, the mask becomes almost invisible because it conforms to the skin so closely. Most first-time users notice that they can see the outline of their own skin through the mask. The Reformer Face Mask is supplied in a saturated pouch and unfolds in two layers (with a carrier film); the mask itself is the inner layer.
5. Is biocellulose vegan?
Yes. Biocellulose is grown by bacterial fermentation of plant sugars, typically from coconut water. No animal-derived inputs are used. The Reformer Face Mask is fully vegan and is not tested on animals at any stage.
6. How is biocellulose made?
Biocellulose is produced by feeding plant sugars (most commonly coconut water) to a non-pathogenic bacterium that secretes pure cellulose fibres into the liquid. After fermentation, the resulting cellulose sheet is washed, sterilised, cut to a facial template, and saturated with serum. The process takes days rather than minutes, which is why biocellulose costs more than spun cotton.
7. Why do dermatologists use biocellulose masks?
Biocellulose has three properties that suit post-procedure use: it is sterile and chemically inert, it forms a moisture-retaining seal without adhesives, and it is cooling on application. Many dermatology and laser practices apply biocellulose masks immediately after fractional laser, microneedling and chemical peels to reduce post-procedure heat and water loss. The Reformer Face Mask uses the same substrate quality.
8. Can biocellulose masks be reused?
No. Biocellulose masks are single-use. The substrate cannot be re-saturated to its original active concentration once dried, and re-use risks microbial contamination on a product applied directly to the face.
9. How long does a biocellulose mask last on the skin?
A biocellulose mask retains usable saturation for the full standard 20-minute application without drying out. The Reformer Face Mask can be left on for up to 30 minutes if you want to extend the session, but the additional benefit between 20 and 30 minutes is marginal.
10. Which is the best biocellulose face mask in Canada?
The Reformer Face Mask is a Canadian-designed biocellulose mask developed by Thomas Tullo, RMT, founder of AMAN Spa Toronto, as part of the Face Pilates™ 8-step treatment. It is formulated for post-treatment recovery and daily hydration and ships across Canada and the United States.
